Essentials of Club Recruitment

Growing your chapter isn't just about getting people in the room this year — it's about building a chapter that keeps going after you graduate. Here's how to grow your chapter this year, and how to make sure it keeps growing after you.

Tips for recruiting

  • Think about your introductory pitch before you begin recruiting. It should be a brief explanation of SafeBAE’s mission and the type of work that your chapter is doing in your school. Feel free to use this as an opportunity to invite them to your next meeting!
  • Stay engaged! Whether you are recruiting through tabling or social media, make sure to keep a positive attitude.
  • Be prepared to answer questions! Students may have questions about your chapter and any meetings or events.

Types of recruiting

There are many ways to recruit students to join your SafeBAE chapter. Below are some popular ways to recruit!
  • Word of mouth. If your school does morning announcements, connect with your school’s administrators to see if it is possible to advertise your club. You can use this time to briefly introduce SafeBAE’s mission along with when and where your chapter meets.
  • Put flyers up. Consider hanging up flyers to advertise your chapter’s meetings! It can be helpful to put them up in spaces that students frequent the most, like the cafeteria or library.
  • Tabling. Work with your chapter’s adult allies to set up a table during lunch. You can hand out flyers with your meeting information or to promote your chapter’s next event. If you have any SafeBAE merch (like bracelets or stickers), this is a good opportunity to hand them out. This can help get students interested in what kind of work you are doing.
  • Social media. Social media is everywhere these days! Use this to your advantage by creating posts to put up on your chapter’s social media. Consider asking current members to be a part of an Instagram reel, sharing why they love being a part of SafeBAE. Be sure to tag us @safe_bae!
  • Recruiting events. Hosting a recruiting event is a great way to connect potential members and introduce them to current members of your chapter. Some previous recruiting events hosted by former chapter leads have included bake sales, dodgeball tournaments, and awareness campaigns.

Grow your Certified Peer Educators

Recruiting members is only half of it. The other half is turning members into people who can lead — and the earlier you start, the longer your chapter gets to benefit.
  • Recruit underclassmen on purpose. A chapter that’s all juniors and seniors is one graduation away from starting over. Bring in freshmen and sophomores every year, and get them certified first — a sophomore who certifies has three years to use it.
  • Offer peer-led trainings at your own school. Once members are certified, work with your advisor to find a slot — a chapter meeting first, then advisory, homeroom, or a health class.
  • Present at your feeder middle school. Ask your advisor to make the introduction, then send your certified peer educators to run a session for 7th and 8th graders. Middle schoolers listen to high schoolers in a way they never do to adults — and every 8th grader in that room arrives at your school already knowing your chapter exists. It’s a recruiting pipeline two years ahead of when you’ll need it.
