Finding Your Faculty Advisor

Your advisor is the adult who makes it possible for your chapter to exist inside your school. Here's what the role is, who to ask, and what to do if you're having trouble finding someone.

What does an advisor do?

Your chapter’s advisor should be your most supportive adult ally. They will work closely with chapter leads and assist your chapter in navigating your school’s guidelines, connecting you with resources, etc.

Who can be an advisor?

An advisor can be any faculty member of your school. Many chapters choose to invite a guidance counselor, social worker, or school nurse to be their chapter’s advisor.

What should I be looking for?

Someone who is willing to donate their time, effort, and knowledge. They should be familiar with your chapter’s goals and mission. It is an added bonus if they have prior experience in advocacy or violence prevention.

What if my chapter cannot find an advisor?

Hang up flyers to promote the position. Start by letting your school know the role is open. It can help to put them where teachers will see them, like the staff lounge, the main office, or department hallways.
Ask your school’s newsletter or newspaper to help. If your school has a newsletter or newspaper for students, consider asking them to help you advertise the position.
